Pool Chemical Log Sheet
A per-pool weekly chemical log with the readings in the order you test them, a column for what you added, and a place for the equipment note that explains the numbers.
Reviewed for 2026, updated September 8, 2026.
A log entry that says added chlorine is worthless three months later. A log entry that records the readings before dosing, the product, the amount, and what the equipment pad looked like is the difference between a shrug and an answer when a customer asks why the water was cloudy or a manufacturer asks about maintenance before honoring a warranty. This sheet captures the same fields in the same order at every visit so the trend across a season is visible at a glance. Keep one sheet per pool, fill in the top row with the targets you set for that specific pool at takeover, and write every visit as its own line.
The typical target row is a starting point, not a rule. Cyanuric acid, bather load, and sun exposure all change what free chlorine a pool actually needs, which is why our article on why free chlorine keeps dropping between weekly pool service visits is worth reading before you set the numbers. The Pool Chlorine Dose and Cost Calculator in our Tools section turns the gap between a reading and the target into a dose and a cost for that pool volume. If you outgrow paper, the guide on this site explains what to look for in software that logs faster than a clipboard.
| Date and time | Free chlorine (ppm) | Combined chlorine (ppm) | pH | Total alkalinity (ppm) | Product added and amount | Equipment note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical target for this pool (set yours at takeover) | Often 1 to 3 ppm, higher when stabilizer is high | Typically under 0.5 ppm | Typically 7.2 to 7.8 | Typically 80 to 120 ppm | Dose against the volume on file | Clean filter baseline in psi |
| Example: 2026-09-08, 9:15 am | 1.5 | 0.3 | 7.8 | 110 | Example: 1 gal liquid chlorine, 8 oz muriatic acid | Example: filter at 18 psi against a 14 psi baseline, backwashed |
